Inukjuak (Port Harrison), (1911-2007),
Serpentine, 11.5 x 9 x 5.5, dated and inscribed
Inukpuk began carving while living off the land. After moving to Inukjuak in the 1950s, (Saumik) James Houston encouraged him to continue. His work often portrays childrearing, domestic life and hunting. In 1973, Inukpuk was elected a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. He first gained wide attention with the TD Bank Financial Group’s 1951 purchase of one of his sculptures "Hunter", possibly the first large figure produced by a Canadian Inuk at that time. Inukpuk’s work was also included in the 1953 Eskimo Carvings exhibition at Gimpel Fils gallery in London.
